Time Diary

Hello everyone, it's been a while since my last post. Over the past several weeks, we've been talking about Social Media and how it affects our lives an has integrated itself into our daily routines. over the past four days, I have documented my activity on my phone to see how long i typically use applications, and also during what time of the day do I typically use social media. I believe that by analyzing my experiences, i will gain a better understanding of areas in my life that might need adjusting. Luckily, Iphone includes a feature that records activity and usage of all applications throughout the week. The results are as follows.

February 12 - 18

Weekly Summary

Number of Pickups

Analysis of the data shows that on average, I spend roughly 4 1/2 hours each day on my phone, the majority of which is spent on entertainment with a total usage of nearly 15 hours that week. The application that takes up most of the time is Youtube. The next largest category is Social media which upon further analysis is split fairly evenly between Instagram and Text Message. It seems that the most popular times for me using social media are typically early in the mornings. This makes sense as I usually listen to music on Youtube during my morning commutes or during my Gym Sessions. I also noticed a general spike during the evening when I would commute back from school in traffic.

I was also able to catch an interesting trend. My social media patterns directly reflected what was going on in my life during that time. For example, during times where I was at work or in class, my social media usage dropped to reflect these changes. looking at the data over the course of the week, you can see that the periods of low usage correlated with times I was unable to use my phone. Also, if for example an important event is coming up in my family, my social media usage reflects this by changing from Youtube and Instagram to text message. Also weekends are ironically when I spend the least amount of time on social media, mostly because I use the time to be with my family instead of being on my phone. Its really only during the work/ school week where I become most active.
